Yoshi was voted the best videogame sidekick of all time and it's no surprise! Yoshi allows Mario to run faster, jump farther, and even (def)eat enemies that he would not be able to tackle on his own. At the same time, Yoshi cannot follow Mario on all his adventures and sometimes must be left behind for our hero to progress.
Being a Mental Health Superhero is just like that! When you are supporting someone with a mental health struggle, there are times when you fill a very hands-on role in getting them where they need to be, physically and emotionally. Like Yoshi, your job is to help block negative influences and obtain necessary resources. On the other hand, you will also have experiences where you will not be able to follow your loved one for their entire journey. Sometimes this is by choice to keep yourself safe from abuse or to avoid becoming an enabler. Other times, your assistance may rejected completely as they choose a more diffcult/dangerous path. In the best of situations, you are able to step back as your loved one steps up in recovery. Either way, an important part of being a Mental Health Superhero is manintaing this balance and being willing to help when and how you can. Your efforts are worth it!
Happy Halloween everyone! Thank you for joining me on another crazy October of#ClosetCosplay4MentalHealth!
